It cannot be denied that the world over karate kata (pre-arranged movements) is being neglected and sacrificed to the more spectacular kumite, (fighting). Therefore, is this not a reason to start preserving these unique forms of karate training?
After all, when done properly the results can be reflected by the beauty, power, sharpness and accuracy and with the intention it deserves those watching can feel both excited and inspired by the sheer power of the said kata being performed and to others it can be indescribably appealing. But this type of kata performance cannot be achieved without a full understanding of the martial art of karate and regular practice combined.
Even the renowned Shaolin monks throughout their history are well-known for their skills in both kata (forms) and fighting abilities. If this form of training were not successful why would they have continued to train in this way for centuries? Not only that, but their traditions continue to this day. They still use the methods handed down to them by the ancients.
Remember, kata performances have spread the karate gospel around the world. Although recently kata has come under some criticism from a few detractors, mainly for its show-business approach. It is an undeniable fact that it has done a lot of good in spreading the word for karate and many of its achievements has yet to be equalled.
In addition, if you train the true Samurai budo way then you must disregard your own life. But in sport, we have to take safety measures therefore, you must learn to differentiate between the two. In true karate if you are afraid of the task then you fail.
With the recent explosion of interest in the west of reality based self-protection methods, a great deal of attention has been centred on the physical contact aspect only of that particular combat system as a final test of the trainees ability.
There have been many truths and half-truths told about the performance of kata and its effectiveness in a fighting situation and system. So I leave it up to those literate and intelligent enough to sort truth from fiction.
The story of karate is to be found within the katas of the various styles of fighting systems most have evolved over many centuries. Until the Second World War were many of the documents and senior instructors where either destroyed or killed.
Thus, there is very little validity to many of the myths and legends found in the many martial arts books. What's more, many of the stories have become part of popular mythology through television and films, both of which have indorsed this mixture of fantasy, myth and half-truths.
The shocking collapse of karate kata due to the extraordinary boom in reality based systems of the 90s and 2000s, and the devastating global decline in karate kata during this time impacted on every Karateka's training, outlook and lack of understanding.
Saviours of True Bubo Karate
In addition, the signs of that arrival were visible years and years in advance and yet almost no-one predicated it. Now, due to modern scientific and painstaking research over many years of ancient fighting techniques and methods namely karate, some Martial arts historians have uncovered and acquired profound knowledge of karate kata as it was and how it should be taught to be effective in any self-defence situation and in doing so have managed to separate truth from fiction.
Today, many modern fighting systems are taught by people with more imagination than knowledge of past Asian combat systems mainly karate. So what is the outcome of all this hype? It is simply this: More will perish on the battlefield than will survive.
Moreover, it is to these karate historians we turn, as is their aim of restoring to those interested souls traditional karate kata to its original effective application Bunkie form. The result, you can now literally tap into the effective and proven self-defence moves and the kata's variations to overcome any attacker.
Enough said.
The words below say it all.
In warfare at kata I drilled
In military arts I'm skilled
If we can but kata restore
Karate heroes will to honours soar.
